Hughes sprinted to win at the Red Bull Ring

David Beckmann started from pole position following his 8th position on Saturday’s main race. Unfortunately, Jenzer Motorsport’s German caught the start poorly causing the second and third starter putting him in a Trident sandwich made of Ryan Tveter and Giuliano Alesi. The trio crashed at the first turn when the American Ryan Tveter moved to the inner line putting all three drivers out of the race.
Following the incident Jake Hughes and Pedro Piquet were aiming for the leader position. In the end the British took the Remus-turn better taking first place ahead of Trident’s Brazilian.
After the virtual safety car session ended Hughes already built a 1.2 seconds gap with Piquet defending his second place from Pulcini. Piquet could keep the Italian behind and started to attach Hughes using his DRS taking first place a lap later.
The British ART driver did not want to leave his victory and took the first place back from Piquet two laps later when the Brazilian already run out of his DRS options which are limited to 4 times in a GP3 sprint race.
Hughes kept the place and won the race just 0.8 seconds ahead of Pedro Piquet and Leonardo Pulcini. ART’s driver scored his first victory of the 2018 season of GP3 series.
Fourth place goes to Alessio Lorandi who took advantage when Callum Illott went too wild and left the track while attacking Pulcini. Following the mistake Dorian Boccolacci arrived on the ART driver when Alessio Lorandi used their fight as the right time to overtake both.
Boccolacci took fifth position ahead of Ilott, Mazepin and Niko Kari. ART’s Anthoine Hubert starting from 17th position granted 9th on the sprint race saving what he could.
Ilott is currently leading the championship with 69 points in front of Hubert and Pulcini.
The next round of GP3 Series will take place next week in Silverstone.
