Alex Lynn is development driver for the Williams Martini Racing F1 team and also racing driver for the French DAMS team in the GP2 series but how did he start racing and what are his goals? We had the chance to speak to the 2014 GP3 Champion.

Alex was born on September 17, 1993 in Essex, United Kingdom. His love for motorsports started at an early age because of his dad, as he was soo into motorsports. He started his career in karting at the age of eleven in the Mini Max championship.
“My Dad has always been into motorsport so I was always watching it and loved it. I did well in karting and things progressed from there really”, he mentioned. After spending five years in karting, he made the big jump to the single-seaters competing in the Michelin Formula Renault Winter Cup, where he finished first. The following year he raced in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and in Formula Renault 2.0 UK, where he dominated by scoring 12 wins out of 20 starts. That gave him the championship. Also, he was named British Club Driver of the Year at the 2011 Autosport Awards.

In 2012, the Briton moved to British Formula 3, finishing fourth in the championship. The following year he competed in the FIA European F3 Championship, where he finished third and was named Rookie of the Year. But his best moment of the year, and of his career so far, was winning the Macau F3 Grand Prix. As he mentioned to us: “I think it made people take notice of me as a racing driver and has helped me get to where I am today.”

In 2014, Lynn raced in GP3, where he got the championship after winning 3 races to become the first British to claim the title. But achieving all those championships it´s not so easy. A driver has to be well prepared, specially when they´re racing in tracks they haven´t race before. The now DAMS Team driver told us about his preparation: “I complete a lot of preparation with the DAMS team, particularly in the simulator, so I’m comfortable with both the car and the individual track. Fitness is a big part too so I spend a lot of time working on my strength and cardiovascular fitness to ensure I’m in the best shape.”
In 2015 he made his GP2 Series debut with the French team DAMS, he scored 2 wins, 4 podiums and 2 pole positions that gave him the sixth place in the championship. This is his second year in GP2 and with the team. His main goal is to win this season´s championship, which is tight between the first six places Raffaele Marciello, Mitch Evans, Norman Nato, Artem Markelov, Oliver Rowland, Antonio Giovinazzi and him.

Considered as one of the most promising talents in GP2, he considers his former teammate Pierre Gasly, Artem Markelov, Norman Nato and Raffaele Marciello as his biggest rivals. “It’s a very competitive series so I feel I have a few main rivals in them”, he said, “It’s very tight at the top at the moment from a points perspective.”

He also is Williams Martini Racing’s Development Driver since 2015, which consists in helping the team to adapt the car, meaning he has to spend a lot of time in the simulator, described by Alex as “an amazing piece of kit, it’s very advanced.” This role gets him close to his dream to be a Formula One driver, “that is the dream but it’s very early days and I’m 100% focused on fighting for the GP2 title this year.”

The Briton, who sees him as a World Champion and living the dream in ten years, is more than ready to fight for it.
