Dorian Boccolacci dominates the sprint race in Budapest

GP3 Series opened the program at the Hungaroring on Sunday morning. The sprint race started in sunny and clear conditions with around 30 degrees in air. With Dorian Boccolacci on pole position Juan Manuel Correa started from first row on the last race before the summer break.

When the lights went off Dorian Boccolacci did not hesitate and turned first in the end of the straight despite some attack from the back by Juan Manuel Correa. The American driver could not find place next to Boccolacci and found himself on fourth position losing two places when both Callum Ilott and Jake Hughes left him standing on the first lap.

After yesterday’s collision and retirement Niko Kari could not finish the sprint race either when found himself stuck in the tyre wall at Turn 11 during the first lap.

Boccolacci kept building his gap not leaving any chances to Ilott to take the lead extending the difference to 4.6 second by the end of lap six while yesterday’s poleman the championship leader Anthoine Hubert was already attacking Correa for the fourth place. The Frenchman soon left the American driver behind to be attacked by Leonardo Pulcini followed by David Beckmann and Ryan Tveter who were in close fight with each other.

Halfway the race Dorian Boccolacci slowed down to save his tyres. Callum Ilott seemed to get closer but Boccolacci’s advantage was too huge to close up on the MP Motorsport driver. Even though the gap decreased to 3.8 seconds Ilott had no chance to attack Boccolacci who crossed the lines on first place scoring his first victory of the season ahead of Callum Ilott. Anthoine Hubert made a nice close up finishing third with another podium in his pocket while Leonardo Pulcini took fourth place followed by two Americans Juan Manuel Correa and Ryan Tveter. Trident’s new driver David Beckmann and GP3’s only woman driver Tatiana Calderon completing the point scorers.

The next round of GP3 Series will take place in Spa-Francorchamps from 24 to 26th of August after the summer break.
