PREMA Racing grabs P6 in treacherous qualifying session

PREMA Racing posted sixth place today in Melbourne in a rain-affected FIA Formula 2 qualifying session. Heavy rainfall hit the Albert Park Circuit before the session started, with the temporary venue becoming a treacherous environment for drivers.

In the early part of the session, Ollie Bearman was caught off guard by the wet and made contact with the barriers. The British racer was able to come back to the pits on his own power, and the team made the needed repairs to send him back out when the action resumed. As the track conditions improved, the drivers circulated around the racetrack preparing for the closing stages.

Unfortunately, another crash led to a red flag with minutes to go, and while Bearman capitalized on a positive lap to grab P6, Frederik Vesti got the short end of the stick. The Dane had done a solid job during qualifying, but lost the chance to make a final improvement and had to settle for P13. He will try to use his pace to fight his way up in the races.

7 FREDERIK VESTI

“P13 was definitely not what we had the pace for. We were in the top-5 for the majority of the session, but a red flag at the end meant that we could not improve. Sometimes, it goes this way, and we can’t do anything about it. We will come back stronger in the races and score some points.”

“Considering everything, we can be happy with this qualifying. At the start, I aquaplaned off. I was trying to bring the car back to the box as it was too dangerous to complete a lap, but I completely lost it. I think it maybe was too wet for the green flag. After that, I think the team did an amazing job fixing the damage to the car, and I’m super proud of them. They really saved me. After that, I managed to put a decent lap in. We could have taken more, but with what happened, P6 is a positive result as it puts us in a good position for both races.”
