PREMA Racing faces contact, safety-car issues in Silverstone

It was a difficult day for PREMA Racing at Silverstone, as the FIA Formula 2 Championship Feature Race at the British venue featured incidents and safety-car situations. Starting from P10, Sprint Race winner Frederik Vesti quickly started to make gains and dived for the pits after starting on option tyres for an undercut.

A successive safety car meant that the strategy wasn’t going to pay off. While he was determined to make the most out of the situation, his race didn’t last much longer as he was rear-ended under safety car and punted into another car. He was forced to retire with front suspension damage.

Ollie Bearman had a clean start and moved up to P3 with a promising pace to fight for for a podium. The British racer’s strategy was also on impacted by the safety car situations. Bearman was still able to finish sixth although contact with another driver led him to a 5-second penalty that pushed him down to P8.

“An unfortunate Race Day. It was positive after a very good start from P10 to P7 and then boxed quite early to go for a good undercut which seemed very attractive. The safety car came and it was the worst possible timing which was very unfortunate and brought us down to P16. Then I got hit from behind during the safety car and had to retire the car. We reset, we come back, we still have the win from yesterday and the championship lead, and we continue to push.”

“Difficult race with a mistake on my side, that’s unfortunate, but the pace was looking good. I really need to reset and come back for the rest of the season because I can’t keep having mistakes like this. The start was good, I took P3 and almost got to the lead. After that, I was holding position, boxed under the safety car, while the prime-option runners got a free stop. We maximized the race considering everything, but the mistake is really painful.”
